3 Days Birdwatching Merzouga

3 Days Birdwatching in Merzouga Desert with Local Guide

This 3 Days Birdwatching in Merzouga tour is made for bird lovers who want more time to explore the best desert birding spots around Erg Chebbi. With three full days, we can visit different habitats, including small seasonal lakes, sand dunes, dry riverbeds, palm groves, rocky areas, desert plains, and quiet hidden spots known by locals.

We start early each morning because sunrise is one of the best times for bird activity in the Sahara. During the tour, we move by 4×4 and adapt the program depending on the season, weather, and recent bird sightings. This gives us a better chance to look for special desert birds such as Desert Sparrow, Egyptian Nightjar, Greater Hoopoe Lark, African Desert Warbler, Cream-colored Courser, Crowned Sandgrouse, Spotted Sandgrouse, Fulvous Babbler, and more.

The tour is flexible and suitable for both beginner birdwatchers and experienced birders. We take time for photography, quiet observation, and enjoying the peaceful desert landscapes. Each day includes birdwatching in different areas, with a simple Berber picnic in nature.

Trip Highlights

Daily Program

The program is flexible because bird activity depends on the season, weather, and nature, so we may change the route a little to give you the best chance of seeing different desert birds.

Day 1: Sunrise Birdwatching Around Merzouga Desert

We start early in the morning, around sunrise, because this is one of the best times to see birds in the desert. We pick you up from your hotel or desert camp in Merzouga by 4×4 vehicle and begin our birdwatching day.

Our first stop is usually near the small seasonal lakes or water areas around Merzouga, where sandgrouse often come to drink in the morning. This is a beautiful moment for birdwatchers and photographers, especially when the light is soft and the desert is quiet.

After that, we continue exploring different birding spots around Erg Chebbi. Depending on the season and recent bird activity, we may visit dry riverbeds, open desert plains, palm groves, and rocky areas. During the day, we look for species such as Desert Sparrow, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Desert Wheatear, Cream-colored Courser, African Desert Warbler, and other desert birds.

Around midday, we enjoy a traditional Berber picnic under an acacia tree in a peaceful desert area. After some rest, we continue birdwatching in the afternoon before we return to your hotel or camp in Merzouga.

On the second day, we start again early in the morning and visit different birdwatching areas around Merzouga. This day gives us more time to explore quiet desert tracks, remote plains, small farms, dry wadis, and hidden places known by locals.

Depending on the season, we may search for special birds such as Egyptian Nightjar, Fulvous Babbler, Tristram’s Warbler, Desert Sparrow, Crowned Sandgrouse, Spotted Sandgrouse, and maybe raptors like Kestrel or Barbary Falcon.

We take the day slowly, with time for photography, observation, and short stops whenever we find good bird activity. Around midday, we stop for a simple Berber-style picnic in nature, then continue birdwatching in the afternoon based on the light, weather, and movement of the birds.

At the end of the day, we return to your hotel or desert camp in Merzouga.

On the third day, we start early again for one last sunrise birdwatching experience. This final day is flexible and can be adapted depending on what we have already seen during the first two days and which birds you still hope to find.

We may return to a good birding location for better photos, visit a new desert area, or focus on specific species that are more active in the morning. We may also explore palm groves, rocky desert zones, open plains, and water points around Merzouga.

The goal of this last day is to enjoy a relaxed but rewarding birdwatching experience, with more chances to observe desert birds in their natural habitat. After our final picnic or short break in nature, we continue birdwatching for a little longer before we return to your hotel or camp in Merzouga, ending the 3 Days Birdwatching in Merzouga tour.
