Merzouga wildlife guide

WHO AM I?

Welcome to Merzouga Birding. My name is Moha, a local birding guide from the Merzouga area, near the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeast Morocco.

Merzouga Birding is created to help visitors discover the quiet side of the Sahara, where desert birds, beautiful landscapes, and local knowledge come together.

The story behind Merzouga Birding

Merzouga Birding started from a simple love for the desert and its wildlife. Growing up in Merzouga, I learned the hidden places where birds come to drink, rest, and feed around the dunes, seasonal lakes, palm groves, and rocky desert areas.

After many years of guiding visitors in the region, I created Merzouga Birding to share this quieter side of the Sahara with birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers. The goal is simple: to offer honest, local, and respectful birding experiences around Erg Chebbi.

A day of absolutely magical birdwatching with the family! A huge thank you to Moha, our guide, of incredible kindness, who knows the desert as his pocket and has introduced us to incredible landscapes and species, including the magnificent desert night owl. Children also loved looking for fossils. An unforgettable experience that we highly recommend!

We spent a great day with Moha who is an expert guide! We were able to see all the species of birds desired! His expertise is valuable to find gangas in the morning who come to drink or fawn Craterope in palm groves hard to find without his help! In addition to these observations the lunch was excellent I highly recommend Moha!

Three memorable days in 4x4 in the desert of Merzouga to photograph the birds, thank you Mohamed for your kindness and for making us discover this environment and local wildlife. Next time try to learn the name of the birds in French because it is on we will come back.

Why Go Birding With Me?

At Merzouga Birding, the experience is simple, honest, and personal. We do not offer rushed tours. We focus on giving you enough time to enjoy the birds, take photos, and experience the desert calmly.

Our birding trips are suitable for both beginners and experienced birdwatchers. You do not need to be an expert to join us. If you love nature, birds, photography, or quiet desert landscapes, you are welcome.

We usually use a 4×4 vehicle to reach different birding spots around Merzouga. Many trips start early in the morning, often around sunrise, because this is one of the best times to see bird activity, especially near water areas where sandgrouse may come to drink.
