Trip Highlights

Daily Program

The program is flexible because bird activity depends on the season, weather, and nature, so the route may change a little to give you the best chance of seeing different desert birds.

Day 1: Sunrise Birdwatching Around Merzouga Desert

We start early in the morning, around sunrise, because this is one of the best times to see birds in the desert. We pick you up from your hotel or desert camp in Merzouga by 4×4 vehicle and begin our birdwatching day.

Our first stop is usually near the small seasonal lakes or water areas around Merzouga, where sandgrouse often come to drink in the morning. This is a special moment for birdwatchers and photographers, especially when the light is soft and the desert is quiet.

After that, we continue exploring different birding spots around Erg Chebbi. Depending on the season and recent bird activity, we may visit dry riverbeds, open desert plains, palm groves, and rocky areas. During the day, we look for species such as Desert Sparrow, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Desert Wheatear, Cream-colored Courser, African Desert Warbler, and other desert birds.

Around midday, we enjoy a traditional Berber picnic under an acacia tree in a peaceful desert area. After some rest, we continue birdwatching in the afternoon until late evening then we return to your hotel.

On the second day, we start again early in the morning to enjoy another sunrise birdwatching experience. This day is flexible, and we adapt it depending on what we saw on the first day, what we missed and which birds you are most interested in finding.

We explore different areas around Merzouga, including quiet desert tracks, remote plains, small farms, dry wadis, and hidden spots known by locals. The goal is to increase our chances of seeing more desert species and having better photography opportunities.

Depending on the season, we may search for special birds such as Egyptian Nightjar, Desert Sparrow, Fulvous Babbler, Tristram’s Warbler, Crowned Sandgrouse, Spotted Sandgrouse, and maybe raptors like Kestrel or Barbary Falcon!

During the day, we stop again for a simple Berber-style picnic in nature, with time to relax and enjoy the silence of the Sahara. In the afternoon, we continue visiting birding locations based on the activity of the day, then we return to your hotel or camp in Merzouga, ending the 2 Days Birdwatching in Merzouga tour.
